Italian, European & Heirloom seeds

Over the years we have tried many varieties of vegetable and herb seeds for sale, seedlings and grafted plants. As we ventured into some of the less mainstream varieties, we tried several of the commercially available seeds for sale with varying results and sometimes quite poor germination rates.

My search for the ultimate Italian tomato seed for sale led me to Franchi Sementi seed. This company has been in one family since 1783, has a terrific range of great tasting vegetables and herbs and most of all, an amazing germination rate from generously filled seed packets.

We have grown their seeds for several years now and now have them available for sale.

The seeds have proven time and again to provide beautiful varieties of Italian and other European varieties of veegetable and herb seeds with high germination rates and good yields. Seed packs are generous in quantity and value for money with good shelf life as well.

Broccoli Calabrese
"Sprouting broccoli from Calabria" is tender with excellent taste and produces abundant side shoots from the main stem, and secondary stems.
Broccoli Rapini
"Broccoli rabe is a delicious green winter vegetable that tastes slightly peppery, cooks quickly and is best braised boiled or steamed until al dente in a little olive oil flavoured with chilli and/or garlic.
Cauliflower Verona
"Good sized head of tasty cream curd on this cauliflower that is a speciality of the Verona area.

Carrot Gigante
"Excellent taste in a crisp, conical shaped carrot that does well in heavy soil. Good all around carrot.
Chicory da Taglio
"Light green cutting chicory. Called “cicoretta” and "radicchio" by Italians, this plant has rounded leaves with no serrations and a pleasant mild taste.
Chicory Misticanza
"A mix of 12 varieties of radicchio and chicory including spadona, treviso, castlefranco, verona & others and a convenient cut and come again mixture for salads.

Eggplant Violetta Lunga
"Long violet" eggplant is a good reliable producer with deep purple fruit to about 20cm. Has a classic rich taste and is grown all over Italy.
Fennel Bianco Perfezione
Sometimes called Florence fennel bianco perfezione produces a beautifully white, sweet and crunchy bulb.
Tuscan Kale
Cavolo nero, is the only kale grown in Italy and is particularly popular in Tuscany. Wrinkled dark green (almost black) leaves with an excellent sweet flavour

Lettuce Misticanza
Mix of 14 lettuce varieties for the perfect salad. Broadcast sow seeds about 2 cm apart from 3 weeks before last frost.
Onion Tropea
Famous onion from Tropea in Calabria where it has its own festival. Very tender and sweet and considered to have a broad range of health benefits.
Capsicum (Pepper) Padron
From Spain and a famous tapas when fried in olive oil and sprinkled with salt. Produces a large quantity of small green peppers to 8cm. Very sweet and mild and excellent for frying.
Pepper Misticanza Seed Butternut Pumpkin Seed Rocket Coltivata
Capsicum (Pepper) Misticanza
A mixture of three classic, large peppers from Piemonte region and ideal for salads, roasting or stuffing.
Pumpkin Butternut
Mid to late vigourous plant producing elongated, slightly ribbed pumpkins with firm, yellow/orange sweet flesh.
Rocket Coltivata
“Cultivated” rocket is easy to grow and adds a spicy note to salads.

Rocket Selvetica
This wild rocket grows a little more slowly than the coltivated variety, but has an excellent taste and texture.
Tomato Cuor di Bue
“Oxheart tomato” is a large, mid-early, vigourous plant producing heart-shaped, meaty, deep red fruit to 180g. Real tomato taste for eating fresh or cooked.
Tomato Pantano
Pantano is an heirloom variety from Northern Italy is a good producer of 300g red beefsteak types

Tomato Principe Borghese
Principe Borghese is a mid-late, indeterminate with small 60g plum shaped fruit. It is a prolific producer
Tomato Red Cherry
Early, indeterminate variety producing an abundance of small, round tomatoes with very good flavour. Ideal for growing where space is limited and in pots.
Tomato Roma
Determinate, mid early plum tomato used primarily for sauce, but also good fresh. Fleshy fruit about 75 g with very little liquid
Tomato San Marzano 2 Seed Zucchini verde d'Italia Seed Zucchini alberello di Sarzana
Tomato San Marzano 2
San Marzano 2 is a plum tomato with elongate fruit around 80g, and ideally suited to make passata/sauce or canning. It is the one you normally get in your tin of Italian tomatoes.
Zucchini di Sarzana
Early bush variety with good production of cylindrical, weakly ribbed, light green fruits.
Zucchini Striato d'Italia
“Little Tree of Sarzano” is a light green zucchini with white speckles and some ribbing and has a delicate flavor and produces many flowers

This brilliant green, very aromatic plant and essential ingredient for Italian tomato dishes and pesto but can also be used in many other dishes
Basil Foglie di Lattuga
"Lettuce-leaf basil". This is a vigorous plant with large leaves and a milder taste than Italiano Classico.
Basil Bolloso Napoletano
"Blistered leaf from Naples” is a large leaf basil with very tender leaves that have an intense aroma and flavour. Ideal for all uses.
Parsley di Napoli
Parsley Gigante di Napoli
"Giant parsley of Naples". This is a tall, aromatic plant with good-sized, indented leaves which re-grows on cutting.
